Cost is $300 cash or check only. Students can bring ID and money of up to 4 other eligible students. Students in good standing academically are given first priority. Those on conduct probation will be ineligible.

Join Bishop Rhoades on April 17th for this beautiful opportunity to meditate on our Lord's journey to Calvary. Gather at St. Joseph Church at noon, then journey to St. Patrick's, St. Hedwig, St. Augustine, St. Stanislaus for the blessing of the Palms, and Holy Cross Church for Mass at 4:00. This is a great opportunity to meet Bishop Rhodes, and enjoy refreshments following mass.

Inspiring sold out audiences in New York and Washington D.C., No Place Called Home will be performed at Holy Cross College’s Driscoll Auditorium Friday April 15, 7 P.M. Kim Schultz--a New York actress, playwright and comedian--reprises her role in this one-woman play where she acts as both narrator and portrays 11 different characters with incredible physicality, sensibility and humor. Presented as a fund raiser for the Iraqi Student Project of Michiana. Proceeds go to support Iraqi students (former refugees) on our campuses. The play is co-sponsored by the American Red Cross of St. Joseph County. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students available the night of the event. Holy Cross Welcomes back nine students who over Spring Break traveled on a pilgrimage to the St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal. The group was accompanied by students from both St. Mary’s and Notre Dame. Leading the pilgrimage was Campus Minister Andrew Polaniecki and Holy Cross Frs. Drew Gawyrch and Jim Gallagher. There is hope that this will now be an annual trip. In celebration of this week’s Constitution Day, Professor Jeff Langan will be giving a presentation this Wednesday, September 15, at 7:00 pm in the Driscoll Lounge on Orestes Brownson’s The American Republic: Its Constitution, Tendencies and Destiny (1865). Discussion and Q&A will follow, with light refreshments provided.

It is likely that many of us here at Holy Cross don’t know that much about Orestes Brownson, but he was a remarkable American with an immediate connection to Notre Dame, Indiana. Buried in the crypt of the Basilica of the Scared Heart at Notre Dame, Brownson (1803-76) was perhaps his century’s most famous American convert to Catholicism. A New England Transcendentalist in his early years and an ardent patriot in support of the Union during the Civil War, he published The American Republic at the War’s end, examining the Constitution and the American nation through his perspectives as a Catholic.

“I write throughout as a Christian, because I am a Christian; as a Catholic, because all Christian principles, nay, all real principles are catholic, and there is nothing sectarian either in nature or in revelation. I am a Catholic by God’s grace and great goodness, and must write as I am. . . . Moreover, though I write for all Americans, without distinction of sect or party, I have had more especially in view the people of my own religious communion. It is no discredit to a man in the United States at the present day to be a firm, sincere, and devout Catholic. . . . I expect the most satisfactory appreciation of my book from the thinking and educated classes among Catholics; but I speak to my countrymen at large.”

More than 60 teens from the area will be here on campus until Saturday, and so if you happen to be around please welcome them and make them feel at home. Along with numerous young adults helping with the Conference, the Franciscan Brothers Minor are here as well helping to assist throughout the week. The Friars recently moved from Pennsylvania to Fort Wayne to stay close to Bishop Rhoades. The Friars are hard to miss with their ankle length brown woolen tunics. This is the their first visit to our campus, so please welcome them as well.

Baseball Game Moved

Due to scheduling conflicts the game with Ancilla College on Sunday, April 25th, has been rescheduled for Friday, April 23rd, at 4pm at Thomas Memorial Stadium in Niles, Mich.
Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one. The season series is currently tied at 1 game apiece.

Table Tennis coming to the Pfeil Center

Many of the nation's top table tennis competitors will be on the campus of Holy Cross College for the 46th St. Joseph Valley Open on May 1-2. Play begins at 9:00 AM both days, and will climax with the Open Championships on Sunday afternoon. Quarterfinals are expected to be held at approximately noon Sunday in the McKenna Arena of the Pfeil Center, followed shortly by the semis and finals at 3:00 PM. Players of all levels will compete in 22 different age and rating events over the 2 days. Among the elite players competing include:

Mission Team is sponsoring Danielle Rose--Catholic singer, songwriter performing at the 8:00 PM Mass, Sunday April 25 in the Saint Joseph Chapel on the Holy Cross College Campus. Danielle Rose Skorich is a self-described Catholic music missionary who has now produced two albums, Defining Beauty (2001) and Mysteries (2003). She grew up in Duluth, Minnesota (like Bob Dylan) where her family lives and where she can still sometimes be found, when she's not on the road sharing with others the love of Jesus and Mary through her music.

Hope for Haiti Concert

As the focus of the world turns away from the earthquake disaster in Haiti, the onset of the rainy season has only exacerbated the difficulties faced by the Haitian people.

A group of Holy Cross College students are hoping to reinvigorate donors with a rock concert on the plaza at the Pfeil Center on the Holy Cross College campus. Music by the band Big Wheels and Animal Crackers and Nick Harley will start at 2 PM on Sunday, April 25^th. Speakers will include Bob Kloska VP of Mission Advancement and Michael Griffin, director of the college’s service learning program. Snacks and refreshments will be served and donations are encouraged. Funds collected will go to the Holy Cross Mission Center.

"Striking Out Cancer" - March 27th

On Saturday, March 27th, the Holy Cross baseball team will be hosting their first “Striking Out Cancer” game with Siena Heights University at Thomas Memorial Stadium located in Niles, Mich. All proceeds will be donated to the United Cancer Services.

United Cancer Services is located in Elkhart (Ind.) and is committed to helping local residents. “United Cancer is celebrating 52 years of helping your neighbors pay for treatment supplies and medicine while they are in cancer treatment,” said Executive Director for United Cancer Peter Norton. “While many large national organizations raise funds for research, United Cancer is not a branch office of a national organization so 100% of the funds we raise stay local.”

According to Norton United Cancer expects to help 170 local cancer patients in 2010 and will make a $200,000 impact in Michiana this year. “Because we are a local organization, the support of community leaders like the Holy Cross baseball team is vital to the success of our mission to help local cancer patients, and we are thankful for their great support."

Admission to the game is free, but donations will be accepted to support the patients that have been diagnosed with cancer. The Saints will also be taking pledges from fans for every batter Holy Cross strikes out. Forms will be available at the gate or you can visit http://www.hcsaints.com/ and print out the form.

Feast of St. Patrick

Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of St. Patrick. Mass will be celebrated in the St. Joseph Chapel at 12:05. There will be an additional Tridentine Latin Mass celebrated this evening in the St. Joseph Chapel at 7:00 p.m.

St. Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission. St. Patrick died in 461 and is the Patron Saint of Ireland.

Fourth Sunday of Lent: I do believe Lord

On this fourth Sunday of Lent, we see Christ opening the physical and spiritual eyes of a beggar. "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see." Christ placed mud on the eyes of the blind man, but the blind man himself had to wash it off. Christ gave all that was necessary for the blind man to see, but without the action of the blind man there would have been no sight.

The season of Lent is now four weeks in, and the sacrifices that we once felt so much zeal for may now be nothing but a wearying obligation. Each penance may feel like a crown of thorns and every prayer as empty, meaningless words. During Lent, we can easily become so engulfed in and worn out by our penances that we are blinded to the heart of the season-blinded to Christ. When we become so overcome with the action itself that we forget its source and end, we must allow Christ to once again open our eyes. When you are having a hard time keeping your Lenten penance, bring your struggles to Christ in the very sacrifice that you are struggling with. He thirsts for you as you are. Christ is a fount of graces, constantly allowing our needs to reach Him. It is our choice to accept and persevere. Christ clears our vision, but we must choose to see.

Third Sunday of Lent Reflection

A Conversation at the Well "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;
but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst;
the water I shall give will become in him
a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14

The season of Lent is an opportunity. Each of us are called in our own way to come to Christ. Everyone has the opportunity to share in Christ's redemptive love. In the Gospel on the 3rd Sunday of Lent, we see that Jesus offers a Samaritan woman this same opportunity. He offers her the water of eternal life, the same water that poured out from His side on the cross. We can see time and time again through the Gospel that Christ calls on those who were outcasts. Christ's actions with the Samaritan speak volumes of His message to humanity. Its a common theme that is shared many times throughout His life.

Lent is a challenge, an opportunity for all of us not only to reflect and grow as we prepare for the Savior's resurrection, but to share the Good News with all people. It is a call to reach out the giving hand to all those who can share in His love. Let this be a moment where we, like Christ, share the story of God's divine mercy not only in our prayers and thoughts, but also in our actions. May His example give us the strength to live out our faith as disciples. For it is what we do that testifies to what we believe.
